Pinball. A game of skill and precision. Not meant for the faint of heart, but always ready for those who want a challenge. It seems that pinball has always been a popular game in the arcades or at home. Every console has had a pinball game and the PlayStation 4 is no exception the rule. Zen Pinball 2 is the de facto console pinball game these days and it’s not hard to see why. A game that is easy to pick up and play, and once you hone your trigger skills, it is very rewarding to get a high score. Zen Pinball 2 has numerous different tables for you to play. The main game comes with a few tables, but if you’re looking for something more your style, you can download new tables from the store. There’s something for everyone. If you’re a Star Wars fan or a Super Hero fan, or even if you want something more old school, you’ll find it here.
Today we will be looking at the Iron & Steel Pack. This DLC content includes two new tables. The first is Castle Storm – a medieval themed table with dragons, and orcs and based on the game of the same name. And the second is Wild West Rampage – A western themed table with outlaws and shootouts.
Castle Storm takes you the age when Kings ruled the land and Dragons were problematic. The table is laid out in such a way that it’s not too difficult, but in order to get some high scores you’re going to need to have some quick reflexes. A dragon is perched at the top of the table and it towers over you ready to attack at any moment. The ball is launched by a donkey which is unique and kind of cute. There are various areas that feel like a mini-game almost, as the camera zooms in and you have two more paddles to control. This can catch you off guard the first, or second time that you get the ball to the area, but once you’ve managed to control the zone, you’ll be racking up the score in no time. There are missions that happen on the main table as you’re playing which add to the excitement and atmosphere. For example, during one mission I found a horde of berserkers rushing my paddles. It was my duty as defender of the castle to defeat this army! How do you go about doing that? Easy, just hit them with your ball. These missions last until a specific amount of time runs out, you complete the objective, or you lose your ball. All over the table are different missions, and different ways to start them. Skilled players will be able to easily unlock all there is to do on this table.
Wild West Rampage takes you to the Wild West as you fight off bandits and look for your fortune. The table has a lot going on, which means there’s a lot for you to do. Like Castle Storm there are missions that you can unlock by hitting certain points on the table or reaching a point total. Wanted posters will appear and if you get your ball into a specific spot, you can engage in a duel. If successful you’ll collect the bounty in the form of a sweet, sweet high score. The atmosphere of the table is excellent and if you’re a fan of westerns, you’ll love this table.
Both tables have very unique music and sound effects that really help immerse you into the time period. The clanking of swords or the sounds of pistols happen often, but they’re unique enough that it’s not annoying. There’s so many areas for you to place the ball that you’ll hear something new every time you play. The music for the different tables are extremely well done. It’s exactly what you would expect to hear, but with just enough modern influence that it won’t annoy players.
Over all, if you want a challenge and to experience something not so “mainstream” as Star Wars or Marvel themed tables, the Iron & Steel Pack is a great addition to your Zen Pinball 2 table collection. There is enough variety in the two tables that it feels new and fresh every time you play them. If you’re not sure if this is for you, you can download a demo of the tables that lasts for a limited time.
